A jump rope is a length of rope or cord material used for jumping by swinging it over your head and under your feet. Jump rope activity can be traced back to 1600 A.D. when the Egyptians used vines for jumping (many people associated jump rope with girls’ play, history indicates jump roping has initially been a man’s game). The Egyptian army soldiers used jump rope as a means of staying in shape for battle. Another name used for Jumping ropes is “skipping,” which comes from an Old English word meaning “to jump over.” Recorded history indicates the Dutch settlers from the Netherlands brought the two rope version game over to America in the 1600 century. Years later, jump rope was called “Double Dutch.”

A jump rope is a tool used for skipping that consists of two lengths (typically one meter each} of a durable string with handles at either end; the length is generally determined by the jumper’s height, weight, age, and fitness level. Historical jump ropes were natural vines that had no handles. Instead, they would be held between fingers and swung to skip over the ground obstacles like stones or sticks placed across it to not trip up other players during games played outside their homes. In the 1920s first commercial model appeared called “The Original Double Dutch Rope Skipping Ropes.” They added an easy-to-grip plastic tube design to a traditional wooden structure with strings.
